Up in Central NJ

Woodnative Apr 18, 2007 06:34 PM

It has been a cold, and recently VERY wet Spring. It is still cool, but I have been checking the pen daily and found one of my two outdoor boxies up for the first time this evening. Good to see her.....I am always a little nervous, and always amazed to see them appear from an area covered with snow a few weeks earlier.

Incidently, my renewed NJ permit for 2007 came just a week or so ago. Apparently they are very short of personnel in that part of Fish and Wildlife.

I also live in Central Jersey. I cover my turtles in the fall with several feet of leaves. This helps keep the ground from freezing to deep and also it keeps the ground from warming up to fast in the spring. In an another week or two after we get some warmer weather I will remove the leaves so the ground starts to warm up. Its usually well into May before all the turtles are up.
