Frozen Food what happens if snake

rottenweiler9 Apr 18, 2007 07:46 PM

swallows it. I fed my retic a couple days ago and I sometimes put crawlers on top of a hide box to thaw out for others. For the first time, my amel decided it wanted those to. I am not sure at what point he ate them but what can happen to a snake that eats frozen food? He is about 3 ft long now, and he eats small rats, just to give an idea how big he is, if that matters.

Thank you

Jeff

If the rodent is not fully thawed then it starts to defrost in the snake's stomach and because of the snake's stomach juices it cause the rat to decompose. Septicemia can then set in and the snake could die.

Provide a lot of water and boost the temps up a little bit. Like a degree or two and keep a close eye out. The extra heat will help aid and speed up the digestion process.

I am not saying this will happen to your snake. It's just what could happen.

Best of luck.

So, I should get him to poop as soon as possible. He went directly to the heat for his belly, I will crank up the air temp to 87, right now its at 85. Maybe take him for a bath today or tommorow.

Thank you

That can sometimes happen if the food isn't fully thawed.

Out of curiosity, what is his /her hot spot at?
I keep my Tics at 90o but you could boost yours up to 92o.

Yes the higher heat will speed the process up which is what you want.

I would wait on the soaking. Wait till after he /she deficates. For some reason if their tummies are upset and they go for a soak it causes them to regurgitate whatever is in their stomach.

Just leave the kid in his cage and don't move him around. Keep his water dish full of fresh water.

The 85 is the air temp, the hot side of the cage for the belly heat is upper 90's, and the cooler side for the belly is 80.

Thank you for the advise

So, I took him out and when I did he just happened to go to the bathroom on the carpet in my basement. So, This is a good sign, although no brown stuff yet.

Thank you
