Rice Paddy Frog (Occidozyga lima)

Mothi Aug 13, 2003 11:51 PM

Does anyone know where I can find some of these frogs for sale? I have them a few years back but can't find them in the same pet store anymore. I wanted to get some again since they were great to have. Thanks.

They are being marketed as "floating frogs" in my area (Northern California) or as "asian floating frogs"

See if your local dealer can obtain them under that name.

I just bought one a few days ago - they only had one.
I really like him (or her - don't know ...)

Speaking of Paddy frogs - since this one is my first, I have a few questions.

My local pet store *finally* got crickets in - so I bought a bunch (so I don't run out) - yesterday was the first day I was able to feed him.

I swear - he was floating in the water, moved towards the cricket when he first saw it move and then froze - and sat there. When it moved again - I couldn't believe my eyes. It looked like from a still position in the water, he got air and leaped out of the water to pounce. He pushed off the water, not a water plant or rock.

Am I just seeing things, or are these frogs able to push off the water enough that they can actually get airborne from a still position?

Secondly - do know how readily they breed?
Since it was priced at $2.99 I assume they breed readily - either that or they are being mass imported. But I can't find any info on breeding them anywhere.

Make sure it's a Rice Paddy frog then, because I was sold 4 Crab-Eating Frogs under the name Rice Paddy Frogs just because they can live in rice paddys for $2.99.

What I have is definitely a rice patty frog.
It was sold under the name "floating frog" - not rice paddy frog.

But it is definitely a rice paddy frog.

What store did you find it in? Large chain or small shop? I bought one years ago from a PetsMart, but I can't find them so far.

I do recall them just floating on the water top and lunging for crickets. They can become little tubby guys and are great.

That website has a picture of the floating frog. The belly should look like creamy whitish little pearls. The top is bumpy brown with darker spots. Some have a stripe down their back and a ting of green.

It was a small independent pet shop that deals mostly with fish and birds.

They have few herps - but their herp selection is extremely limited and typically overpriced (at least compared with SF Bay Area prices)

The pet store was called "Shasta Pets" located in Redding, CA.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I am located in Southern California. About 5 years ago I had a few of there frogs that I bought from a Petsmart, but so far I have not been able to find them again in 3 different stores and am waiting to see if they could special order them. I also went to Petco and they have a frog called "Rice Field Frog" for 5.99 but I don't know what it looks like. Otherwise they don't have anything else with a similar name on their order sheet. I guess I will have to check some small shops in the area to see if any sell them...

Try the east bay vivarium.

http://www.eastbayvivarium.com/

They have it listed (though w/o scientific name) but as sold out - but often what they have listed on the web site is outdated.

When I lived in Bay Area - I would shop their regularly, from the days when they were emeryville to oakland and then (after the quake of 89 when they were forced to move) to berkeley.

They are good people, and I think they do ship.

Thanks for the info. I am going to email them and see if they can let me know when they get more in. One day I will get them again.
