handling in adult gecko vs. beardy

unsped Apr 18, 2007 10:51 PM

im currently trying to decide between a beardy and a leopard gecko,
ive never had either, but am an adult and have successfully high
maintnence pets so im fairly confident i could provide for either. the
beardy's i certainly like for personality and tameness as adults. im
wondering how similar/disimilar an adult gecko might be. it would be
nice to handhold, or have the reptile perched on your shoulder etc..
under supervision. my understanding is that the geckos calm down a bit
when they age but do you have an idea of what i could expect vs. a
beardy?

you should get both :P lol kidding. my bro's getting a beardy soon just because it's a big lizard that likes to munch on bugs n mice n stuff lol i didnt actually realise how big beardy's actually get. but they look pretty sweet. as far as i understand both become quite tame when they get old, especially if there acustomed to their owner. as i saw in a petshop beardy's can certainly move for there size, and the baby ones look soooo damn kool ^^ but it just depends what you prefer, i think leoo's would be easier to herd, but i dont know about beardy's and there mating habits. i prefer leo's, they look more delicate, especially if there colours are wild, beardy colours tend to be quite mundane and are mostly sandy coloured i think. but remember, in the end its up to you, i dont think a leo or a beardy would sit on your shouilder like a parrot lol but i can let mine crawl all over me without concern, just try not to make sudden movements, its gives em a little fright and they'll most likely try parachuting lol

ya even though people do it all the time its not really a good idea to walk around with your leopard gecko on your shoulder, however if you are sitting somewhere that is fine. beardies are probably a little tuffer and can hanlde that type of stuff a lot better. they just kinda sit where ever you put them where as a leopard gecko tries to explore and could easily disapear if your not watching for a minute. i have had them escape into the floor/heater vent, almost roasted the poor thing. luckily i knew he was missing and heard him freak out when the air was turned on.

we have both and although its a personal decision it cames down to weather you want a pet that will tolerate you holding it or one that will actually want to be held. leos are great we have 2 and one i svery mellow and tolerant to being held but as soon as i return him to his tank he has to bath and th efemale is a little spazy still but shes pretty young. on the other hand from what i hear beardies actuall will come to you, you can train them with mealies, ours is ....moody some days he likes to be held and others he'll puff up and his as soon as i open the tank.. from talking to other people though he's an exception to the rule as most beardies are pretty mellow

Hello , interesting question ,

I personally like both
i have 8 beared dragon's all sizes and having them from real small to big adults is fun . they love to move around and look .. and like shoulders for some reason too . and some are funny to watch ,
some beared dragons have tempers and can be mean but ive only ever seen nice beared dragons ? that just mostly gap instead of be super aggressive .

Gecko's are fun too i have 2 .. there exciting to watch becuase when there in there tanks they move around alot up and down there enviorment .
geckos on the other hand aren't like beared dragons and prefer not to be holded like a breaded dragon they prefer to like there tanks / humid hids ... but i try and hold mine once a day ? for a few mintues they love to roam around to but both reptiles can be stressed out so witch ever you decided to choose give them sometime to ajust .. before holding them fully

good luck choosing i love both species.. and i hopfully will be getting more geckos next weeken

I've got 3 leos, and 1 beardie. I say got for the beardie.

The leos are great, but are nocturnal. They really don't like to be held, my leos are in my bedroom, and have a nice black light set up on them, so I can check em out at night.

My beardie is in my office, so I someone to keep me up during the day.

Personal opinion, I wouldn't get rid of either, but if I had to choose one. It'd be beardie all day.
