Need help for sick Gecko

ckataoka Apr 19, 2007 04:20 PM

We have leopard gecko that is about a year old. He has been thriving but now he is deteriorating for some reason. A few months ago his tail fell off, but it grew back. Now he is getting very skinny and won't eat either. And he has sort of a dark spot on his belly. He has not been dropped, so I don't think it is a bruise. He has fresh water and we feed him worms. He does not like crickets at all.

Does that sound like anything you guys have seen?

Sorry to hear about your gecko. I don't know, sounds like it could be parasites, maybe crypto. It's kind of weird it dropped it's tail though. I'd get a parasite check and see what happens. Good luck.

if you keep your gecko on sand it sounds like impactation and you need to get it to the vet imediatly! when geckos are in that bad of shape they dont last much longer, that is very extreme and it is good that you are doing something now, but you have waited way too long. at this point it could be several things and i would go to a vet. i however until then, would feed it vanilla Ensure to get some fluids and vitamins in it.

Time for a vet visit. You're vet is going to need a to do a fecal so if he's not eating you're not going to get a sample for him. Try this slurry if you can to get a sample for your vet.

G3 Slurry: Slurry to help stimulating the feeding response of Non-eating Geckos
By: Marcia McGuiness www.goldengategeckos.com

In a blender, combine:
1 small can Hill's A/D pet food (available at most vets)
1/4-1/3 cup Ensure (not chocolate)
1 jar baby food squash
1/4-1/3 cup Pedialite
2 crushed tablets or contents of 2 capsules Milk Thistle (herbal supplement, liver purifier, found at most drug stores.)
1/2 tsp. each calcium powder and herp vitamin powder
1 large handful of mealworms, added slowly while mixture is blending
Puree all ingredients until completely smooth, and pour into ice cube tray(s) and freeze. Store cubes in zip-lock bag in the freezer until ready to use, then thaw out 1 cube at a time and store in fridge for 2-3 days. I use the empty baby food jar for this purpose, washing it thoroughly after each batch.

*Lately, I have been adding about 1 Tblsp. T-Rex Gargoyle MRP to each new thawed out cube.

Using this mixture, draw a full dropper (1 ml. eye dropper type) and place a drop on the gecko's nose. It will start to lick it off, and as it does, slowly squeeze out a little at a time. Most geckos love this food, and will lap it up. Patience is the key here.

**NOTE: Do NOT tell anyone in your household you put mealworms in the blender!

How did he loose his tail? one of our due to an accident lost the bottom part of hois tail almost 4 months ago and is just now starting to get healthy again for a while he got really skinny and wouldn't eat or anything...lots of patience later he started eating 1 or 2 crickets a week and thats all i could get him to eat I suplimented for a couple weeks pured baby food and mealies and crickets (may never use the blender again...lol)with calcium and vitamins i fed him off a baby food dropper twice a week and finally one day he started eating and pooping and everything again he's now back to his normal activitly level and eating like a horse but if loosing his tail was tramatic for him he may just be getting over it. I would highly recomend a trip to the vet though just to make sure. Good luck! and keep us posted
