Finally got a head shot

EddieF Apr 19, 2007 05:56 PM

I've been trying to get a decent picture of our Florida King's head since we got her back in February! You know how digital cameras have that delay between when you snap it and when it decides to take the picture. Well that's all the time ol' Belly needs to get out of focus! But this one turned out okay I think...

Sweet snake! Great tongue shot too. Most digi cams will allow you to slightly depress the snap button, then when you have your subject in view, fully depress the button, eliminating the delay. Mine does anyway.

Thank you! Yeah, I think I can do that. But it's hard! She's squirming in one hand, I'm fumbling with the camera in the other! She just shed yesterday so she's pretty bright. I'm thawing some dinner for her right now, I might snap a picture of her feeding...

That a georgeous snake and a great shot. You should be proud.

Well, it's our first snake so you guys have to sit through the baby pictures every couple of weeks. I am really grateful for the help I've gotten on this list. She really seems to be doing great. Shedding well, eating well, doing all the right snake things. I look forward to, in about a week, giving her a bigger tank with more room and furniture.

Eddie,

I be willing to be that she is het for lavender albino. Get a male mate for her that is either lavender albino with high red or het for albino lavender.

A lot of that I don't understand, but I just got a book on Kingsnakes in the mail yesterday so I am hoping a lot of these terms will become clear.

While I'm at it, what are the numbers in people's signature next to the snake type? What would mine be, number and scientific name?

Thanks. Ed.

ChristopherD Apr 20, 2007 11:39 AM

hello Ed, the numbers are a sex figure a 1.0 is a male so a 1.2 would be one male and two females,
and a brooks or Florida king is a Lampropeltis Getula Floridana

Bluerosy Apr 20, 2007 11:55 AM

Like Chris said the number refer to the sex ratio. The first number is always a male and the second is a female.

0.1 =female
1.0 =male
1.1= pair
1.2 one male and two females.
2.4= two females and four females.

Your red snake is probably het for lavender. If you bred her to a male you pick up this year you can breed her to the male and get this lavender albino that is high red:

My adult female I showed you on another thread will produce these. Your is an exact match.

Awesome! Thank you both. Trying out my impressive numbers below.

Sorry, what does 'het' mean?

The more questions I ask, the more you're all probably thinking, 'is this guy qualified to even OWN a snake?'

0.1 Lampropeltis Getula Floridana

ChristopherD Apr 20, 2007 12:59 PM

That looks correct to me if its a girl,and Brooks are a good snake as Bluerosy often says they are practically bullet proof with proper care which is minimal, compared to others,Brooks Rule,Enjoy i think they are my favorite and not just cause im a Florida Cracker but the variety.Chris

EddieF Apr 20, 2007 10:40 PM

Man, that is really, really beautiful.

I haven't even thought about breeding, but seeing those eggs hatching in another recent thread seems really cool.

So what would the male have to look like, if the female is like yours and mine, to get this color baby?
