Understand that each individual monitor has its own personality, and may never be handleable, or may be friendly. Im not trying to discourage you from them but realize that all boscs with exception of what Ravi bred are all imports, wild caught period. They can grow from 2.5-4.5ft and are medium sized species which in comparison to some other species are a bit lethargic in comparison. They are a very inexpensive animal going as low as $5 retail sometimes. When healthy they want to eat almost everything.

First of all, 99.999% of Bosc monitors are Wild Caught. Do you think a wild animal makes a good cuddle pet? Im trying hard not to sound mean. Savannahs(Boscs) and Niles are some of the LEASTE desireable of the available monitors on the pet trade. Sadly, they are the most readily avail. and the cheapest. If you want a quality animal you have to pay the price. Dont support the cr*ppy Wild Caught pet trade by purchasing another Wild Caught Bosc. Also, why take the gamble with a WC animal? Youre risking having to pay HUGE vet bills on parasite treatment, not to mention not even knowing if the animal is going to acclimate to captivity.

Support breeders. Buy Captive Bred. Buy quality.

If you want something BIG and generally well tempered, buy a Black Throat. If you want something SMALL and well tempered, buy an Ackie. But ALWAYS buy CB(Captive Bred).

There are lots of really good captive bred monitors to choose from.

Best Regards,

Michelle

p.s. Alot of reptile dealers will claim to have CB (captive bred) Boscs and Niles... Ive confronted them, and NONE have proven it.

It would truely be nice if all whom wish to purchase a monitor would by captive bred. Not going to happen with the huge difference in price. Very few novice (1st time keepers) are going to spend that kind of dough on a monitor. If the breeders would lower their prices I am sure more captive bred animals would be purchased. Doubt that will happen either. I plan to buy a pair later this year and will definately buy captive bred. I am with you there. But the importation of WC will not stop until the demand reduces to a point where it is no longer profitable. Interesting dilema. A ban on importation might help but any kind of ban just opens the door for more legislation and potentially worse restrictions. It sucks but what can you do?

etc, etc. Even if you just tell one person. Maybe you change one persons perspetive. Thats a difference.

Amen, sister! If we don't educate and stick to our morals and put our money where our mouths are (and some of us can scream quite loudly), things will never change. I didn't know that Savannahs were mostly wild-caught. Now I know, and won't recommend them to folks unless they come from rescue. Lots of rescues have them!

Thank you very much. You are too true. Its sad though, because most of these animals never even make it to the adoption stage.
lets hope for the best,
Michelle
