Where to get Cuban Boas?

Jeff B Apr 20, 2007 03:12 PM

I currently have a younger male cuban boa and have come across an enclosure that should be big enough for an adult female, so I'd love to have a pair. The only problem is that so far I've only found one for sale on the internet and am actually looking to get one in a couple months. So does anybody breed them themselves or know of people who do?

Hey Jeff,
I'm not positive that he has cubans, but if I remember correctly, Jeff Clark has many different types of boas. I think mainly different rainbows. Try contacting him, if he doesn't reply here first. Here is a reply he made so you can get his contact info.

Hope this helps,

Are there cuban rainbows? Is that what you're talking about? Just thought about that right after I hit post.

Technically, the Cuban boa is classified as a different species under the same genus as the rainbow boas. Don't know if Jeff Clark is working with them or not.

Cuban Boa, Epicrates angulifer (Bibron, 1840)
Rainbow Boa, Epicrates cenchria
...Argentine Rainbow Boa, Epicrates cenchria alvarezi (Abalos, Baez & Nader, 1964)
...Caatinga Rainbow Boa, Epicrates cenchria assisi (Machado, 1945)
...Marajo Island Rainbow Boa, Epicrates cenchria barbouri (Stall, 1938)
...Brazilian Rainbow Boa, Epicrates cenchria cenchria (Linnaeus, 1758)
...Brazilian rainbow boa at Reptile Museum outside Monroe, Washington.Paraguayan Rainbow Boa, Epicrates cenchria crassus (Cope, 1862)
...Peruvian Rainbow Boa, Epicrates cenchria gaigei (Stull, 1938)
...Espirito Santo Rainbow Boa, Epicrates cenchria hygrophilus (Amaral, 1935)
...Colombian Rainbow Boa, Epicrates cenchria maurus (Gray, 1849)
...Central Highland Rainbow Boa, Epicrates cenchria polylepis (Amaral, 1935)
...Rio Branco Rainbow Boa, Epicrates cencheria xerophilus

...Cuban Boas are one of those species that you cannot depend on finding when you want one. I do accasionally see one or two of them advertised on the other boas classifieds here on kingsnake.com. I do also sometimes see them for sale at the bigger shows. I do not know anyone captive breeding them here in the US but there are enough of them that do show up that there must be at least a few people breeding them.

Jeff B,

I have a 3 yo female and just got a 1 1/2 or so old male finally for her. Definitely something harder to find then normal. She was only $100 2 years ago and is still one of my favorite snakes. Actually beaten out my Blackheads, Womas and Diamonds (Don't tell them that though) She is about 6' and will be moving into 72x30x18 caging soon.

I can't wait for her to get around 12' like they show in some pics from Cuba.

As far as breeders, I don't know of any directly. I have emailed with the Bristol and Prague zoos who work with them and trying to get info from them as far as their studbook etc. My two both came from different sources, none of which were actual breeders. I have also seen them here for sale on occasion but I never recorded the seller's info (not to self to do so next time.

I am viewing this species as a special project for myself. I like all my snakes but some definitely are money producers... These I have an interest in due to conservation interests and hope to get their numbers in captivity up.

Alan
