What cages should I get?

highendreptiles Apr 20, 2007 10:14 PM

I have been wanting to get very nice cages for my beardeds. I have been looking at the 48" cages at showcasecages.com, and reptic-plastics.com. Which is the best? Is there better?

do any of those, or make your own. very easy to do, may need some help. melamine works well, as well as other woods with a sealer. table saw required. electrical knowledge a plus as well. could give ya some examples if needed.

There's not much info in the Reptic-Plastic site and this is the first I have seen them so I can't be much help on that. But, I considered and researched showcasecages.com and rejected them. The reason is that their 48" long cage is only 18" High while all the other sizes are 24" high. The problem is that the inset for the dome light is 8"High leaving the inside of the cage under the light less than 10" high. Really its more like 9" after the thickness of the plastic at top and bottom. I spoke to them about this and they confirmed this. Their intent was for this cage to be used by a pet store that generally does not have cage furniture. You could also consider customcages.com.

If you have the time and skill you can build your own for about 1/2 the price. Melamine is available from Home Depot. The previous poster stated that you would need a table saw. Although I own a table saw it was not necessary to make an enclosure. You only need a circular saw, drill, and misc. hand tools.

One of the biggest differences between these two types of cages is the location of the manufacturers. Depending on where you live, you may only have a single choice. Reptic-plastics is locates up here in Canadan, in Montreal Quebec. I don't know if they will ship to the US but I am sure the extra distance would make shipping costs rather prohibitive to bother having them ship directly to you.

The showcases by design cages are very good cages from what they are described as with alot of nice little features, the recessed dome light area and florescent light area, even a heating pad area. It makes these cages great for a wide variety of reptiles, not just bearded dragons. Reptic-plastics also have the recessed dome light area as well, though not sure if they have one for a florescent tube light. Last time I talked to them which was well over a year ago, they indicated the cages can be mounted with a florescent light no problem. I do know some people who bought and love the reptic-plastic cages, so they are good design.

Thus, I feel you can go with either cage but the main factor that should decide it for you is your location. If you are Canadian like me, than you have much fewer options. There are other cage makers in Canada, unfortunately I can't remember who they are off hand. If you are Canadian, I will dig up that info for you. If you are American, there are many cage designers in the states...Cages by Design, Kustom Cages, Freedom Breeder, and many more. Most can be found up in the 'businessess' tab above, in Reptile Magazine, or do a google search for Reptile Cages.
