Vision cages and heating.. please help

python2000 Apr 21, 2007 07:40 AM

Hi! I have the idea to start to buy Vision cages for my ball pythons. I have them i wooden made cages right now but as im currently enlarging my collection i'm considering Visions because they're more easy to move and clean and because they will save some space in the room. They have great design too i think. I'm interested in models 332 and 211. Beofre start, i wanted to ask you how is the heating system of these kind of cages. I have them in a room where the temp in winter is around 20 degrees Celsius and i have to bring it at around 28 during the day. I need to know if it is easy to keep the temp. 8-10 degrees more than outside with 60W heaters (those i have in the wooden cages that are almost equal in dimensions). In any way can you tell me witch kind of heating systems are you using for that kind of Visions?

Thank you

Flavio

If I am correct those models are smaller than what I currently have. I have the 6ft one and the 4ft one. In my 6 foot one I use two medium radient heat panels, and in the 4ft one I have 2 small radient heat panels. Also in the 6ft one I have a heat pad underneath the giant rubbermaid water bowl. With the 6ft cage I have the temps perfect, I also use Helix thermastat. The temps here in IL got below zero and it held, the basement air temp is in the 60's, and I got the temp up on the hot side to 90. AP also makes great cages. I almost like them better. They do not warp like vision does, but don't get me wrong I like vision cages to. I also seal up most of the back with plastic window stuff to keep the humidity in the cage and heat from escaping. I also use 50 watt bulbs in the small light holes they give you.

Good Luck
Jeff

Visions are nice cages. The model 211 and 221 are great sizes.

These cages are made from high density polyethylene, which is easy to clean and is very tough but does not hold in heat as well as your wood cages will. And the glass doors don't help with insulation either.

You can use heat pads, but the air in the cages will likely be as cool as the air in the room (fine for colubrids, maybe not for boids in cold rooms.) I suggest using overhead heat for that reason, or a combination low wattage overhead lamp and a heat pad near the back of the cage. The 211 has a screen that you can use a small reflector dome, but then you can't stack them. You can also try those hockey-puck sized halogen lamp assemblies. Then you can stack the cages.
