California Red Sideds?

herbivorous Apr 21, 2007 11:24 AM

I'm a California resident (Sacramento area) and I'm looking for a good place to find some California red sided garters where it isn't illegal to pester them. Does anybody know a good spot? If you do, please either reply to my post or send me an email. I'd also appreciate it anybody could point me in the direction of a California breeder of the species. Thanks a bunch.

They are protected in Ventura County and south. In the Northern Counties they have a possession limit of two. They are protected in all Ecological Preserves, State Parks, and National Parks/Preserves. All commercial activity is prohibited. California does not issue commercial permits for this species so there are no legal breeders or dealers in California.

I knew that they were protected in Southern California and in state parks, etc., but I wasn't aware that Fish and Game wouldn't issue a permit to breed them. I read the regulations and didn't see anything like that; I only saw the bag limit. Do you know where I could find the rules you're talking about? Thanks.

The only Herps that California issues commercial propogation permits for are the California Kingsnake, The Gopher snake, and the Rosy Boa.
