The Practical Encyclopedia for Keeping and Breeding Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles by Andy C. Highfield. You can find it through the tortoise trust website (either Chelonia.org or Tortoisetrust.org). This will link you to the carapace press site, where there are numerous other books I highly recommend depending upon the species in question. Also, a few things in this book are out of date, so consult the website articles for more up to date information on taxonomy, care, and species slides that show the great variety of shelled beasts out there. This was an invaluable resource when I was attempting to untangle the mess of identifying the many greeks on the market today.

_Medicine and Surgery of Tortoises and Turtles_ is an AMAZING reference book (albeit on the technical side as it is a medical text). before (and/or instead of) plunking down that much money, i'd highly recommend trying to acquire it via your library. even if your library doesn't carry it, they will very likely be able to get it via interlibrary loan (i work in a library, and that's how i was able to get my mitts on a copy for a few weeks or so).
