I'm a terrible mother.....

kellybee Apr 22, 2007 08:13 AM

Elvis laid this morning, i checked her at 6.45 but there was nothing. I went back to bed and checked again when I got up at 7.30 and there were 4 eggs in there. She looked completely emaciated, and very sleepy, I was really worried it had taken its toll on her. Anyway, I lifted her out and offered her water and some wax worms, and she laid a fifth whilst sitting up on her rock, it fell at least 4 inches, and bounced when it hit the sand, and rolled.. I've since put it in the incubator though I have little hope, and have put her back in her lay box.

How on earth can a lizard that looks so terribly emaciated pop something out (times 5), that is easily as big as her head? She must really hate me the poor girl. I had no idea she wasnt done yet, just hope that I didnt stress her too much whilst she was mid-lay and that she forgives me

Seriously, they arent breeding any more if thats what it does to them, I cant do anything about this year but I certainly will think twice next year. She rdly had time to put weight on after the last time before she was looking lumpy again !!!!

I'm glad she fine. As far as how emachiated it leaves them, yes after a while I'm sure it takes it's toll on them and depletes them of calcium as well. Thats why I have many, and do not brumate everyone each year. Some rest, and mate the following year. The few that do mate each year are in good shape OR DON'T.

Also you will hear , give the female plenty of calcium , fresh water, food "while gravid".
** Well in my opinion, they should be conditioned ALL year round. Then when it's time for mating they are in tip- top shape, OR they don't mate.

The egg that bounced of the rock may be fine, I think as soon as they are layed they can be moved, but after they have been placed for a time, then they can not be.

If you think about how those eggs bounce around inside there Mother as she's jumping, running and just bing a Collared lizard, I think it might be able to handle a little 4" roll, I think there's still alot of hope that it'll be O.K.

If you could see what she does with her legs every morning, when she first wakes up you'd understand. We couldnt have found anything more fitting, she is truly hilarious

Hard to beleive maybe, but she is bouncing off the walls like nothing happened today. She is stuffed full of wax worms, thus doesnt look so skinny anymore, and the only giveaway is her thinner than normal tail. I almost cried this morning, but I guess she isnt so fussed, Yoshi is still guarding her nest box since she laid on wednesday, Elvis doesnt seem to care, lol

Just trying to make light of the situation and joke around a little, I'm sure you had a good reason for the name. In the wild they mate evry year and live a long normal, happy life, I'm glad to hear she's, despite the name doing better.

Sure I know I'm really sorry if my reply sounded like I wasnt joking too Really, I was just explaining how we got to the name, lol. She earned it

I really appreciate your cheering me up, it was funny to read, and Eve I appreciate your reassurance about the egg too, I guess because her last batch went mouldy I was hoping I could redeem this clutch
