Can you ID this snake I caught?

joshg1 Apr 22, 2007 06:28 PM

Hi - caught this guy in our driveway (Bay Area, Calfironia) a few days ago. Eating well (pinkies). He's about 18" long.

I'm guessing he's a Pacific Gopher... can anyone tell for sure?

Thanks for your help!

Yep, if I remember correctly, Pacific Gophers are the only kind that live in your area. I caught my first Pacific Gopher while on vacation in California last year. This one was in Los Gatos (unfortunately it was in shed):

Thanks for fast response... I live right near Los Gatos, so that's very helpful to hear that yours was a PG caught there.

Looks like a good looking little Pacific Gopher to me. Very nice set up BTW. Little guys probably lovin it. Nice find. They make great pets.

thanks... he started out in a small plastic tank, but since he was an eager eater and friendly to the hand, we decided to keep him as a pet. We'll see how it goes... thanks for the note.

That is an extremely nice set up you have there! Great job.

Thanks! It's probably overkill for this first-time snake owner but me and the kids are having fun setting up Fluffy's terrarium in ways we think he'll enjoy.

I'm amazed how much he digs and burrows, rearranging the substrate into little caves and hills and things. every morning the tank has a different landscape. I hope that's a good sign that he's happy and active, rather than a bad sign that he doesn't like things and is trying to "fix" it or get out or find food.

He's still eating well, seems active, and as far as we can tell in our anthropomorphizing tendencies, he seems very happy.
