Finally, my first dumbo baby

cee4 Apr 22, 2007 07:43 PM

I FINALLY have done it.It seemed to take me forever since I only started with one male Dumbo and one normal agouti. One of his baby girls grew up and mated with her brother and produced only three babies(she is still kinda young). But she had two regular and one dumbo(too bad its a male).
I had to put the original dumbo male down(bad skin condition) and last weekend found another male but he is young.Noone sells female dumbos anywhere here. But anyway this will bring in fresh blood too.

So if I mate the boughten male dumbo to the original female(half dumbo) will I get half dumbos?

If I breed one of the regular babies(mom and dad both carry dumbo genes) to the dumbo male what will I get?

Sorry Im still trying to understand all the genetics involved here.

Ok if you breed a dumbo to a het dumbo, 1/2 of the litter will be dumbos and 1/2 het dumbos

"Het" dumbo means they carry the gene but don;t show it.

a child of a dumbo is always a het dumbo

If you breed 2 get dumbos you will get 1/4 dumbo, 1/2 het dumbo and 1/4 normal with no dumbo gene at all. There is no way to tell the difference from the hets and non hets in this case.

Oops, that should read

If you breed 2 *H*et dumbos you will get 1/4 dumbo, 1/2 het dumbo and 1/4 normal with no dumbo gene at all.

so there is a 66% chance that the child of 2 het dumbos will also be a het dumbo.

So you answer your question, if you breed a normal looking child of 2 het dumbos, you might get 1/2 dumbos and you might get none.

Its worth it to me to at least try the one normal she has such a pretty color.IF not then they are feeders.

Well good luck, you have a 66% chance she's a dumbo carrier.

I'm currently working oon blue dumbos and even with 2 het parents I tried 2 litters and never got any. so now Im waiting for some of their offspring to breed so I'm pretty much in the same boat.

I have a blue top-eared girl that I'm hoping is het for dumbo that I bred to a sibling that's a blue-buff dumbo. Im hoping now she's pregnant and if so should give birth in about 2 weeks.

so if she is het dumbo, I should get all blue, 1/2 dumbo and 1/2 buff on top of that. SO I have pretty good odds of a blue dumbo in there, as long as not ALL of the dumbos also have buff. Buff on top of blue results in a very light, almost white silver/grey color.

I love the blues but just cant get those around here.So Im just working on converting most all my rats over to dumbos. Then I might try working on colors.I only have 2 adult females(1 normal black and one het dumbo fawn?) and 1 adult male(het dumbo)
But I do have my new male dumbo youngster(hooded) and 2 more young normal females(blacks). And the three new babies, one being a dumbo.
I like the black ones myself but I dont think they are very popular cause they look more like wild rats.

Rat genetics are fun to play with. I was working crossing 3 different traits in to 1. And I finally did it yeah. That post is up top. They are so cute
