Whats wrong with these females/eggs???

kstrope01 Aug 14, 2003 06:49 AM

Not long ago I rescued two adult females from a local pet store. Just to give you an idea of how much they knew, they thought they had a mating pair. They were both of nice size but hadnt been properly taken care of as there was dry skin around their toes and a few digits were already missing.

Needless to say after I had them for a few weeks I attempted to breed them with my male. Not a week or two later one of the females was laying eggs. There is no way that the eggs had formed since put with my male. I am guessing that this female has been bred before and was just laying eggs on schedule with her body. She has since layed about 3 more clutches, none of which have been fertile. The same story applies to the other female.

I know older females will stop producing eggs but they seem to be laying plenty, just not any that are fertile.

My questions are:
Has anyone seen anything similar before?
Do you think they may lay fertile eggs next year?
What do you think caused this?

Thanks,
Kevin

Sometimes females will ovulate without ever being introduced to a male. Their little body decideds that it is breeding season and she should be laying eggs, so it cooks some infertile eggs up. It is very common in most reptile species and perfectly normal.

If you did breed with your male you could get fertle eggs before their done laying their clutches this time. keep a eye on the eggs. My one female started laying eggs this year had not been bred. so i hooked her up with my male and about 2 clutches later i had fertle eggs.

I think they have been bred before, and maybe some one sold them to the pet shop saying they have had eggs, so therefore the pet shop thought it was a male and female. And they are just retaining the sperm that is saved in their bodies. I have bred my female once like 3 months ago and she still lays fertile eggs with her retaining sperm. So she doesn't have to go through the stress of breeding.
