mites, are those the little flying bugs that can sometimes live in moist substrates? or are those something else? Don't have them, just wondering.

I don't think mites fly.. infact I'm sure they don't.

Mites are tiny little spider/crab like creatures. The "flys" your thinking of I think could be fruit flys used to feed frogs etc.
