JCP Behavior

baio44 Apr 23, 2007 12:55 AM

I have a 8 mo old JCP and I was wondering about his hiding habits. I upgraded him to a new tank last month that had turf on the bottom. Despite his hide boxes, I constantly found him under the turf. I have since replaced the turf with a different bottom (3 days ago) that he can not burrow under, yet he tries to push his head through the inpenitrable. Today was his first day he used his hide boxes. He also has plenty of arboreal support, branches and cover to use if he wishes.

Do most people's JCPs stay burrowed all day? Is it OK that I'm trying to get him to use the hide boxes or branches, instead of stashed under the substrate? He is otherwise a healthy, beautiful and tame snake.

Thanks in advance for the responses,
Jeff

Sounds like you have a shy Jungle, I would suggest trying mutliple hiding places, maybe one on the warm side and one or two on the cooler side, Give him an option to hide in several places, that might help with him trying to hide under the substrate. Just my opinion..

Mine only hide during shed or after feeding. I have two hides , a few plants they can hide in/behind and tons of branches. They love the branches.

I think they believe they're birds...

How are your temperatures? Burrowing in non-burrowing species can be a sign that temps are to high and the snake is looking for a cooler spot.
