I don't know what you mean by diversity exactly, but African House Snakes will eat almost any warm blooded animal and lizards and some species of gartersnakes will eat rodents, lizards, amphibians, fish, worms, etc.

The indigos and cribos harbor one of the most varied diets and voracious appetites in the reptile world, due much in part to their high metabolism and they are often likened to varanids without legs.
Drys will readily feed on most anything that will fit into their mouth and I recall speaking with an older gentleman in Homestead, FL who owned 10 acres, which backed up to a large bird sanctuary. He told me of an eastern indigo that would regularly eat leftover dry dog food from a bowl he set out in his yard. In the wild, they will feed on birds, rodents, fish, turtles, frogs, salamanders, other snakes (including venomous), a variety of road kill and, I suppose in at least one case, dry dog food.
In captivity, most will eat just about anything offered and I have a few that relish the occasional hot-dog!

Best regards,

Jeff

Heck, I have an Everglades Ratsnake that I am pretty sure would take hotdogs. He has eaten any prey he's been offered.
Just an individual thing.

Indigos don't constrict, or have the jaw flex that many species do so what they eat is limited in size.

Only D. couperi(eastern indigos)require USF&W interstate commerce permits, should you purchase a specimen from an out of state breeder, though some states require a permit to keep any ESA listed species, whether native or not. Also, you may acquire an eastern indigo from an individual or breeder within your state of residence and forego the interstate commerce permit. However, D. m erebennus (Texas indigos) do not require permits, unless you reside within the Lone Star state, and any of the other species may be purchased, shipped and kept without permits. For a starter Dry, I would recommend a CB D. m melanurus (Black-tail Cribo. Just keep in mind, once you acquire one, you won't want to keep just one! ;0)

Jeff

H. sapiens.

Sorry, couldn't pass that one up.

What goes up must come down...unless it exceeds escape velocity.

Garter snakes....they eat rodents, fish, amphibians, slugs, worms, occasionally birds, roadkill (have seen pics of garters eating roadkill toads and birds)...

goregrind Apr 23, 2007 08:07 PM

my little garter is the reason im asking, i love how i get to feed her fish and worms, its more interesting than rodents.

and one of the above posts makes me want to try and get my ball with an intense feeding response to eat an "all natural hot dog". but only once or twice not as a part of her diet.
