Brooks kingsnake... i think

matt85 Apr 23, 2007 08:06 AM

i purchased a kingsnake from the petco i work at under the impression that it was a florida kingsnake, but now that ive poked around online all the florida kingsnakes ive seen where just black and yellow.

this kingsnake is black, yellow, and orange with flame like patterns going along its side.

here is a pic i found online that looks just like it:

can any one give me some proper info on this snake?

adult size?
temp/humid levels needed?
scientific name and common name?

thank you

I think your snake is properly identified. I'm no expert, I'm a new snake owner, others will chime in soon to confirm.

But this is my Florida or Brooks Kingsnake...some similarities. And someone else told me the scientific name for her, it's shown in my signature beneath this photo...

Yes it is a florida kingsnake (floridana). "Brooksi" (aka Brooks king) was done away with but still used by hobbiests to describe a florida king from either s. dade co florida or a light colored specimen.

Yours is a typical example.

As others have stated - brooksi is florida now.

In my older Conant field guide - brooksi is described as having light tipping on all the scales, I don't know if yours would have been brooksi under old definition or not.
