So, how's breeding going for everyone?

rainbowsrus Apr 23, 2007 12:05 PM

And no, I don't want to hear about your personal life!

I mean your snake breeding. Looks like my BRB's are done breeding. Not seen any hookups for a while and the some of the
males are cruising the cages looking like they are hungry. I'll pull them later this week and see if they eat. If so,
another indicator they are done. For me at least, the males will not eat until breeding season is over. As long as there is
any of that "hot/willing/ready to party" girl snake smell in the air, they don't notice their empty stomaches. Something
about all the blood rushing away from their tiny little brains.

So far all is looking good. I see several females looking huge and the rest are looking gravid as well. Some of them are new
breeders like Daisey and I don't expect large litters from them but they still should pop out some screamers. I'll give it
another week or so but it's about time to close off the pipes and settle in for the long wait for babies.

OT - my boa constrictors have been done for a while. Of the four possibles, I'm certain one is not gravid. Two look good
and strong, swollen and thermoregulating. The fourth is also looking good but is not as far along and not thermoregulating as
much. Time will tell!!

OK, no new pics but since the topic is breeding:

Savannah x Nathan

Savannah x Nathan

Hemipene shed/sperm plug, Fred

Bullseye X Tommy

One last note, Pulled the Genesis babies out of the Q-room as they have not shown any signs of problems at all. Wow, Thing is
off the charts in color. I have much better lighting in the main room and WOW, when I have multiple drawers open at the same
time it really shows. He would be a keeper from any litter.

He started out ahead of the pack in color. A clear, uncontestable leader. But, not only was he ahead, he's coloring up faster and increasing his lead over the others. Significantly, noticeably, amazingly I might add.

I'll work on some group shots with his sibs and see if I canb capture the increase, I know I have older groups shots to compare with.

They do usually get better but some move forther up the scale at a faster pace than others. I had several holdbacks in 2005 that were stunning as babies. I also had Hook in my for sale pile as he was not as stunning as the others. They seemed to plateau out while he just kept coloring up with every shed. Wasn't too long before he passed them up and I kept noticing this wowser animal in the "for sale" group. Eventually I moved him to the old back group and he ended up beating out a couple of initial holdback males for one of the few final keeper slots. For my production, 2005 was the year of the male, most of the super stunning babies were males.

With Thing it was easy since I bought the entire group for the hidden genes. They are all holdbacks until genetics are proven/understood.

here's why:

1) I need Rocky's gender still lol.

2) Too busy to breed.

Darn it...I've kept herps for almost 8 years and have still never bred a single thing.

1) Always need at least one female!
2) Always need at least one male! (parthogenesis excluded)
3) Gotta stick them together.
4) Usually more complicated than that, photoperiod and temperature cycling does seem to help quite a bit.

Dave,
Adam has been in rare form this year (I'm thinking the interaction with Abel the younger male really got him going) and has been all over Eve for the past month. Saturday night my wife and I got home from a nine day trip and the cage was absolutly trashed (the temp probe I have hanging from the middle of the cage and tied off to the branch was ripped in half when the branch got twisted around). Adam and Eve were in the water which had'nt been changed for 9 days (my friend who was misting down the cage was uncomfortable moving them)and the amount of semen floating around was quite the sight. Hopefully some of it found its way home. I'm a little concerned about Eve since she gave birth last year but I fed her heavily and she looks nice and healthy. We'll see about them. The two younger snakes have not been observed doing anything and the young male Abel ate last night.
Always interesting.

Paul
Not a current photo but nice.

...I shipped my last two 2006 babies out yesterday so it must be time to think about what is going to have babies this year. I held some of my female cenchria cenchria back this year to give them a rest. I am trying to get 13 of them bred this year. So far it looks like 7 of them are definitely gravid and I have seen 3 others being bred. In addition to the Brazilians I have one adult female each of alvarezi, asissi, barbouri, maurus and gaigei that have been with males. The gaigei has been bred and looks and acts gravid but she has done the same in the past without laying babies. The alvarezi is definitely gravid and should lay within the next 45 days. The asissi has been eating sporadically since laying babies two years ago and may not have enough weight to reproduce. The barbouri is too heavy to tell for sure whether she is gravid and I have not seen her being bred this year. My maurus seem to have become asexual in their old age. I also have two female Surinam Redtail Boas that have been bred this year. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
