New Cham

howitser Apr 23, 2007 05:04 PM

Just got a new chameleon yesterday. Bringing her home was no problem, she was handleable & all, but once she was in her new tank for a while, she's gotten rather fiesty, trying to get at me through the glass! Just wondering if it's normal (this is my first cham, have several over lizards) & she's just getting readjusted. She did eat & poop already, I've been misting her so she's drinking (I'm setting up the dripper now).

Also, right now she's on paper towels as a substrate, is there anything better?

Thanks!

Howie

Ok...what type of chameleon and how old is it? You possibly may want to reconsider using a screen cage.

I'm not sure how old it is. It's a Senegal, and as I mentioned, seemed pretty mild when I got it at the show and when I brought it home. I'm going to get a screen cage topper for the tank, to give a bit more room for her. I'll see how it goes!

Thanks,

Howie

Glass? Unless she's a baby this will be a problem. Depending on how your lights are placed she will see her reflection and stress. Also, she may paw at the glass for hours trying to get through it. Screen will be much better. She has been through a lot, probably capture and shipping, and will be easily stressed and very upset for quite a while. Don't handle her a lot, give her a lot of foliage for privacy, lots of water, and definitely get more than one fecal checked for parasites. Senegals can be really loaded with them.

Guess I'll look into a screen cage, was trying to stay away from one since my house is usually on the cold side in fall/winter. Maybe I can find some type of 3 sided cover when it gets cool again.

Thanks!

How cold? If not below 60F that shouldn't be a problem at night, and as long as the cham has a good basking area to warm up for the day you should be OK. Plastic or vinyl shower curtains hung on the back and sides of the cage will help hold in humidity and some heat (block radiating chill or drafts).
