OT...Texas herps

paulbuck Apr 24, 2007 08:15 PM

Since today is Tuesday I thought I'd post some pictures from my recent trip to southernmost Texas. The main focus was to scope out the neotropicals (birds) and local specialties but my eye was always out for some herps.
First up was a Diamondback watersnake found basking on a branch over a resaca (oxbow lake):

Next was a Eastern Yellow-bellied Racer I had to run down:

A closeup:

Since I've maxed out my photo space I won't show the Berlandier's Tortoise (2) which in Texas they just call a Texas Tortoise (Berlandier's just a little too fancy a name), the Red-eared sliders, Yellow mud turtle and all the whiptails.
For you bird geeks; WOW!!!!

Thanks Tim. I'll do some cleanup on my 'freebee' sites so ol' cheapo can post some more pics.
By the way, I visited your site and was impressed by your bird photos. What aviary did you take those? One of the things my wife and I re-learned on this last trip is we need a real camera. The diesel driven, 2.1 megapixel beast I bought in '01 just does'nt do well for active, small birds.
Thanks again,
Paul

No problem Paul.

I am glad you enjoyed the bird photos.. the african gray and the macaw are pets and most of the rest of those photos were taken at the Louisville Zoo.

The hardest part about the older digital cameras is the shutter lag.. makes it a bit tough to catch something that moves. The technology is moving fast though, and there are alot of nice "wallet friendly" models available.

That is a very fat watersnake! Think it was gravid/pregnant?

I envy you! I've only seen one racer my entire life(a southern black in SC) and have even walked by one without even noticing it. The people behind me did and when I turned around it was gone! I want a pet racer sooo bad .

Thanks Scott,
I've had the fun of chasing after lots of racers in my time (and caught a couple!). My wife thinks I have some strange connection to snakes because I usually can turn up one everytime we go somewhere (whereas I think I should be finding more).

I found this nice open field that should have TONS of racers...but apparently I went at the wrong time of day and found nothing but a vernal pool filled with frogs.
