um i am positive its a rat snake but im not sure what species ill look it up but its definatley a harmless ratnsake

Yeah, since I found that out here I did a google image search for black ratsnakes and found several with the same pattern and colors. thanks for the help!

Rat snakes can be hard to identify as juveniles because they have a strong pattern like the one you caught. When that thing is about four feet long it will probably be jet black!
