Rack heat and substrate

netoibarra Apr 24, 2007 09:01 PM

Hi, I am brand new to reptiles. I bought a normal male ball python 6 months ago and as you can see by my list of snakes, I am addicted. Anyway, I have quickly run out of enclosures and decided to buy a rack (although I'm not to crazy about putting my beautiful snakes in a rack). My question is what do you guys use for substrate and at what temp do you keep your racks. I bought an animal Plastics 1754 economy rack and a helix dbs 1000. Thanks.

I like using Cypress mulch. I get it untreated from a local Agway for about $4.00 for a 40lb bag. The lady who works at the Agway told me a local zoo also uses this for their setups. I like this because its very natural looking and (I think) the snake would like it better than the newspaper that alot of people use. It also helps keep the humidity better.

Keep the temps at around 85 days 80 nights in the hot spot. Some people run the hot spot at around 90-95, but I find that my snakes will immediately crawl to the cooler end when the temps are this high.

Good luck and feel free to ask all the questions you want.

I have a vision rack system which I must say in my own oppinion is the best on the market for the money.

Thanks, I think the next rack I buy will be a vision.

I have two animal plastics rack, one 32 qt and one 41 qt. Personally I like the care fresh pet bedding the best. Its a little more expensive, but it seems to hold the humidity great, and very easy to clean. I keep my warm spot at about 91 degrees and the room temperature at about 77 degrees in snake room. This allows for my cool spots to be in the low eighties. Seems to work good for me.

I know how you feel, I started with one and everytime i have gone to a show since i have come home with at least one more, lol. I just bought a rack from Reptile Basics and i think they like it better than the cages. I try to keep mine around 88ish, but i have a cold room (72ish). The only reason (besides price) that i would not go with a vision rack is that they are open racks and my room is cold. So i think it depends on your conditions about what rack is best.

I have a vision cb-70 ball rack and I must say its great for heating , I have a snake room in my basement and as with most basements its on the cool side which is fine and the rack operates great due to the fact that it allows for good circulation and heat exchange your balls will never overheat in a vision , cant wait to buy my next one.
