Strong breeding response?

Guttersnacks Apr 25, 2007 09:34 AM

I have a male bubblegum. I found a black rat snake the other day, and wasn't completely positive if it was a male or female just from looking at the vent, so I thought I'd toss it in with my male and see how it goes. Well, he went RIGHT for her. He bit her midsection, but she didnt freak out. So, I pried them apart, and then left them alone again for a short bit. He went right back at her, bit her behind the head, and again, she didnt freak out. So I thought, maybe this a breeding response from him. I shot a pic, and a little bit of video too, sorry for the blurry beginning. After viewing them tied up for a bit, you can see this is DEFINITELY a breeding response. We'll see what happens now....
If they dont breed, it's no big deal. Het for bubblegum (albino rat snake mutt) ratsnakes wont have a market value over a few bucks. It's not worth the trouble to me. I just wanted to carry on the lineage of my favorite snake. I've had him about 10 years now.
Below the pic is a link to a YouTube video of them together. Check it out!!

I've been looking all over the internet world for a picture of a big Bubblegum!! Thank you so much for posting this! I have a 2 year old Bubblegum female whose about 310g and 3 feet long and I've been trying to figure out what she might look like all grown up. I figure her color will wash out a bit but she's gorgous now.

Good luck with your pair, they both look great!

Sarah, did you get that one from Greg Connor? It reminds me a bit of a smaller female I have that I got from him. Very reddish orange with reverse saddles. Kinda neat!
If you'd ever be interested in breeding yours, I'd surely be. I've included a pic of my G.Connor bubblegum, and then the other pix will be of my big male bubblegum

I did see those pictures not too long ago. I'm kind of hoping Aida will stay a bit more colored, but I'm a pastel fan too. I'm mostly just anxious to have her fatten up a bit (and relax a bit, she's quite defensive of her tank although she's never bit me and she's fine when she's out).

I adopted her 3 months ago, so I have no idea where she came from. Her sister is still up for adoption at NEARR (New England Amphibian and Reptile Rescue). She's much more orange under flourescent light and (as you can see from that last picture) pink in daylight. Despite being the "mutts" of the rat snake world, I still love them. It hasn't turned out to be an easy search for people with them though.

As far as breeding her, I go back and forth with the idea. I can't at the moment for space and time reasons and I'd like her get to grow up a little but since I'll have her for a good long time, I think I'll probably breed her eventually. With any luck somebody will want the little ones!

She's my first snake, so I'm a little extra protective

This picture is more her normal color in regular house lighting. I'll get some new pictures of her in a couple weeks.
