Snake not shedding

m77 Apr 25, 2007 01:46 PM

I've a small kingsnake, who's not shedding, I soaked it last night, but wasn't able to get any skin off.
I'm going to put in a bag and soak it again.
It's shed once before.
How long with old skin on before this becomes a real issue ?
Do I need to get this off right now ?, or is it safe to see if it comes off with the next shed ?, or will it not come off ?
Thanks

wow ,
No offense but you must be really new to reptiles.. Let the snake shed on its own .. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE ITS SKIN.

It will shed when its ready. please read more about snakes and reptiles in general. This is something you should have known before aquiring this snake..

Do you have a hide box for it ? How often do you feed it ?

Educate yourself

Sorry for the confusion.
I feed 1-2 pinkies everyh 4-5 days.
After it last ate, I noticed that it was starting to shed.
But only on a spot under its throat, I let it me that night.
Next day no more shed. I soaked it just in a bowl for a couple of hours
just a few more small patches of skin had come off.

It's skin is very wrinkly, his eyes look slightly blue.

It's trying to shed, but not doing very well. It has shed 1x before in my possesion.

My question is should I put it in a bag & soak it, (how long 2-3 hrs / overnight ?) &
try again or let it try.?

Or do I just let it wait till it sheds again I hope both
(old) skins come off. ?

You really need to let the snake shed its self .. If it is having a bad shed fix the reasons that caused it ..

Husbandry is they key .. Does your snake have a hide box? Do you handle it alot ? Give it a hide box and do not handle it .. leave it alone till he gets bigger and stronger.

When snakes are over stressed they show it first with bad sheds...

Good Luck

I'll add that this snake sounds dehydrated, but I can't be certain online. If you're very worried, it doesn't hurt to have a veterinarian look him over. At the very least, contact a local herp club, and get a mentor to stop by and check out your enclosure, the snake, and give you any pointers.

If I had to guess, I'd say you jumped in to early, and that the snake would've gone through shed without your help, albiet probably patchy and incomplete. Place a humid hide in the cage for the next few days. Easiest way to do this is crumple up some paper towels, spray them with water, and put them in an empty tupperware container with an entrance hole cut in it.

As Tom suggested, husbandry improvement is needed for long term success.
