Enclosure modification?

rssmooth Apr 25, 2007 09:19 PM

Hey everyone,

I need a little advice, I have a 48"X 18"X 25" (L x W x H) acrylic enclosure for my Hog Island Boa. He's roughly 4 feet long. I want to utilize the height in my enclosure because my snake seems to be showing interest in climbing. I would like to add a second dimension for example a shelf for climbing or perching. Or even maybe a great climbing branch. Does anyone know how I should go about installing a shelf in an acrylic enclosure or does anyone know where I can find a large sturdy climbing branch for a larger snake? I'm more interest in putting a shelf in the tank (sort of like a second floor).

Thanks

I would assume branches can be purchased at a variety of online vendors. Just surf through the KS classified.

Adding an acrylic shelf should be easy. Just get a piece of 1/4" or 3/8" thick acrylic that fits in the area you want. I would also get a couple of extra strips.

Bond the strips to the sides of the tank with acrylic cement and then bond the shelf to the top of those strips with the same cement. You could bond the edge of the shelf directly to the sides of the tank but this requires the pieces is cut to fit perfectly. By having the acrylic cleats for the shelf to rest on makes this much easier.

If you do something like what Chris said, you can then place one of the branches you get under the shelf, from floor to the underside of the shelf. Just a little bit extra support incase you don't get a really good bond with the acrylic cement. You should be able to get the cement wherever you get a piece of acrylic.
