Find of the week, for me anyways

antelope Apr 25, 2007 11:26 PM

Here's a few shots of a w.c. striped meahl worm from Robstown, Nueces county, Texas caught with a normal under the same board. Sorry I didn't resize the field pics to show the comparison but took a few shots at home. This guy doesn't have a full stripe but it is wide and clean about 60-75% down his body. Neat find, hoope he passes this along to my other Nueces county females!

Very cool find, Todd.
I think John Cherry has a breeding culture of those.

How's the "empty nest syndrome"?

Still pretty empty here, seems the breeding season is just now kicking off, normally see many animals out at night by this time, they are just now starting to appear, I do have one gravid splendida on board and hope to put all my rats together at the females' next shed.

Not really.

Cherry received a gravid female. She laid eggs, and he released her back where she was captured on hisnext trip to the lease. (He didn't want here - it was one of those things where a guy on the lease gave it to John because he was proud that he saw a snake and didn't kill it!) 5 eggs hatched, and all of them had some abnormalities. Some looked almost normal and some were VERY well striped. I don't remember the sex ratio, but I THINK he only had 2 females. It might have been three, but one of those would have been the one with almost no striping. Either way, he only had to STRIPED females.

One died eggbound the first year he bred her, and the second one he bred to an albino emoryi (Don's line). (I remember seeing a large group of normal emoryi on his list at around that time, so maybe those were off of the other female??? - I never asked.)

10 eggs hatched off of the albino male and the good female, but 9 of them were males. That was the onlyyear John made thecross since he returnbed the male back to Don at the endof that season. I was at John'shouse when those eggs pipped, and I actually sexed theclutch becauseI was going to get some. I didn't since he only had one male.

Long story short, I know own the only female from that line and one of the males. I had a second male, but I sold it years ago. These are normal patterned animals, but they likely the ONLY onesout there that can still definitely be traced to John's line. ...especially since I THINK I remember him telling me that the mom to these died before breeding the next year. Lots of bad luck, huh? I got a clutch of eggs from the pair outside right now. We'll see what we see when they hatch.

MyOTHER line of stripe is the one that interests me more since it is inheritable, though. I lost my male, but I'm going to try anget another NORMAL male from thesame locale this year so that I can recover the look while keeping the locality true. All said and done, I've been working with reverse stripedemoryi for a LONG time....

very cool Todd.
Aaron and I found a cool zig zag emoryi a few years ago but it had just (like 30 seconds in front of us) been hit.

That would be a way cool pattern on a emoryi! I hate it when that happens!

Yeah, I've been wanting to get a pattern like thatdeveloped in emoryi, but the necessary "start" just isn't out there. I'm working on it in some of my Kisatchie corns, though.
