Nest box Advice!

kennny Apr 26, 2007 08:10 AM

Hi everyone,

i've been trying to breed for the first time this year and think my female might be gravid - i'm preparing her nest box and was wondering if the entrance should be in the top, side or does it make no difference at all? and does anyone have any prefered substates they use?

many thanks,

kenny

If you use the type rack system that has a dark private area in the back you probably don't need nest boxes. Mine lay fine without them.

A lot of larger breeders are not even using nest boxes! You got to think if you've got 50 or more females, that's a lot of work, just to get them set up! Not to mention the cost of nesting substrate! I do however, put a plastic shoebox (no lid) filled half way with spaghnum moss (dampened)! They seem to like it, but what I like about is, you never have to worry about eggs adhering to things!

.........I have used one or two boxes already but my corns barely fit into shoeboxes and the balls fill up a third of the 34 inch boxes in the rack sometimes........

they will lay them anywhere and gather them up in a coil to keep them together and warm....so they will all usually stick together just fine so you can gather them for the incuvbator...by sticking together they will transfer moisture between themselves and keep each one inflated properly......
