Brownsnake feeding

ferou Apr 26, 2007 12:35 PM

Hi all, My kids found what I think are baby Eastern Brown Snakes in our back yard with about 10 garters.

They fell in love with the little guys and asked to keep them, so here goes some questions for all you experts out there:

1- Do they make for good pets?
2- They don't seem to have the garter smell to them, do they actualy smell less?
3- What do they eat? They are tiny about 7 to 9 inches long.
4- Prefered habitat?
5- anything else that will help

Thank you in advance for the answers.

Sorry that's a Northern Brown Snake not Eastern.

We have northern brown snakes here on campus down at the barns. They usually hatch around September to October (at the latest) and are a little thinner then a pencil and a little bit shorter then one. They stay really small and a lot of people mistake them for worms especially earlier on. When catching one from time to time they needed a place to hide and a branch to climb on and sit in the sun. They always drank from a water bowl and took almost right away to eating earthworms (obviously smaller ones at first). You just have to make sure the worms aren't half as long as the body of the snake or they'll get it almost all the way down then have to regurgitate it (so cut them in half). They never ate any crickets but might as a last resort. Very calm with virtually zero aggression. I doubt they would ever bite. Ours never gave off an oder at all so I'm assuming they either don't have that defense gland or they never use it. I personally think they are awesome starter snakes considering they won't get bigger then a foot in length. Good luck!
