The difference between a good and bad thermometer!!!

rickman Feb 07, 2003 09:54 PM

I was concerned about the behavior of my BD, so I went out and bought one of those $30.00 digital thermometers from Radio Shack with the probe reader. I was shocked at how far off the pet store brand thermometers are off in comparison to the digital thermometer. No wonder he's been weird acting...his temperatures have been about 7-10 degrees too cool.

I find the flukers brand of thermometers to be very accurate. In petstores, the thermometers are usually fixed via adhesive to the the glass, and this of course does not accurately reflect the basking spot temps. The Flukers stick on thermometers are excellent for getting an overall picture--I keep one on each end of the tank--but you definetely need a digital therm with a probe to make accurate readings of the basking area.
