born with venom?

black_wolf Apr 26, 2007 05:13 PM

First off i don't keep hots and don't currently plan to as I know I would get bit. I do volunteer work with my reptile group going to our local museum of science and history where we can bring reptiles and talk to people about them educating them about them and what not. I normally bring my corn snake and the 2 most common questions I get her is; "Is it poisonous?", and "When does it get it's fangs?"

Venomous snakes are born with fangs right? And are they born with their venom sacks full? I know that venom is "expensive" for the animals to make and what not.
But would you need to worry about the bite from a day old coral or something?

venomous snakes are born with everything in and on their body. From the moment they hatch / drop they are capable of delivering a bite with a dose of venom. The amount of venom is ofcourse some smaller then that of an adult from that species but it is just as potent as their parents venom ..

Whether or not a hatchling Micrurus is capable of inflicting a lethal bite is probably debatable. Regaardless, it is definitely worthy of a great deal of respect. Any of the larger crotalids, such as adamanteus or atrox or horridus are in all likelihood born with a sufficient quantity of venom (& the instincts to use it) to deliver a fatal bite to an adult human.

Baby mammals are not born with teeth, but baby reptiles cerainly are.

The linked website may have some information in it that will help you in your talks.

I agree with Greg. I have hatched out a couple cluches of Texas Corals and they were so small that I fed the tails from Ground Skinks to get them started! As small as they are, I would be surprised if they were physically capable of biting a person. Of course snakes are known for surprising us! Why chance it?
