F1, F2 etc. Can Someone Explain?

Occasionally, I see the terms F1, F2 etc. used and would like to know if someone would be kind enough to explain it to me. How is it applied?

F1 = represent first generation offspring
f2 = represent second generation offspring

original snakes
babies from above = children F1
babies from above children = grandchildren F2

Just FYI, the "F" in F1, F2, etc stands for filial.
