You always have wonderful pics. I hvae a good digital camera, but have not taken the time to learn how to use it best. Thus, I am always stuck on full auto mode, so I just push a button. I do turn it to sport mode when the snake are active, but that is about it.

Great pics

That first non rainbow... is that a woma? or an albino black head python? Very nice looking snake the carpets are great too, and of course the rainbows.

For my photography skills I think the big problem I have is it takes me too long to get the picture...or my camera is just slow...because half the time I try and set up pictures, the subject matter keeps slithering out of frame LOL.

The snakes are not too bad...if I get them out of their cage during the day and don't give them alot of time to 'wake up' I can get a few good pictures before they start to wonder off.

My geckos on the other hand...forget it...They will sit perfectly still till I start getting the camera lined up for the shot..and they either head to the nearest dark spot (flash works but half the time whites out everything so badly, picture looks like crap, or the gecko is in a too dark spot and the camera can't focus properly). Or it just scurries up the wall and I have to put the camera down to stop him from getting to high LOL

Thanks!
That is a woma (although I wish I had an albino blackhead).

I know all to well about trying to get the "shot" only to have the subject crawl, hop or slither off.. It sometimes takes alot of patience to photo herps (even captive animals).

I have found that front opening tanks can help sometimes to photograph the most "flighty" of our scaled friends..

Here's a hint...

Put the snake under a bowl or a box. Something that makes it coil up and that is dark. Keep it under there for several minutes.... you can use this time to set up your camera. Then when you lift up the box, chances are the snake will be slightly disoriented from the sudden light and you can get anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes of picture taking time.

I always use this method when I want to get the snake nice and big in the picture and not all stretched out. Sometimes the snake isnt fooled though and comes flying out from under there. But more often than not, it works like a charm!

With a small snake.. you can also just cup your hands over them.. (or have a second person cup their hands over them).

I have a 2.5 gallon bucket that I have cut a hole in just for covering them and letting em coil up.. sometimes it works..

Thanks Jamie.. That is a red foot tortoise (may be two of them, but I think all of the pics I posted are of the same one). I took the three of them outside for the first time earlier this week and let em run around in the sun..

thanks Dave.. that feeling goes both ways.. I love looking at those animals your keeping down there

BTW, did you notice the note on the '06 female? Everytime she sheds, a bit more of her crescents go away.. it is not just the crescent either, the black circle below the crescent is fading too.. leaving only the body color.. I thought maybe the scales where just getting bigger, but I have been photographing 9 different crescents with each of the past 5 sheds.. and they are actually changing. Have you ever seen one do this before?

BTW.. both of your Fall babies shed this weekend.. they are starting to come around.. I will get some shots up in the Monday pics for ya!!

UGH, just lost a long reply due to accidentally hitting the page back key.....

I don't have any I've noticed losing crescents or color in that area. I do have a very red male from EBV that has some red areas turning brown near the head. I'll see if I can get a pic to show the change.

I'd love to see updated pics of my babies. So often they just go away and I never see them again. 2006 had some really cool crescent oddities pop up in the BO-PO pairing. Too bad they didn't have the color of my 2005 babies. I kept a pair of "Blush" babies to see if I can cross them over into the higher color lines.

Blush BO-PO-18 "Lon"

And Blush BO-PO-03 Lily

Tim,
Those are great pics. I too have a Woma that is a great pet. I was planning initially to get a pair but he'll probably stay a bachelor.
I've got some ideas for a new camera and it is not the inexpensive route. They say a great photographer can take wonderful images with crappy equipment. I'm shooting for being a crappy photographer taking lousy images with high end stuff!
Revisiting an earlier post: I thought you'd be interested to know I was lucky enough to see African Grey Parrots in Kenya. At the time they were only found in the Kakamega (sp?) Forest and the population was less than 20. I saw about half that number at one time feeding and chattering in the canopy early in the morning. Kind of bitter sweet. I'm not sure if there are any left in Kenya now (this was in 2001).
Keep the pics coming.
Paul
A pic of Wally when young; I'll have to load some recent ones.

TimOsborne Apr 28, 2007 12:15 PM

Thanks Paul!
You have a fantastic looking woma too!! I am really taken by them.. I went along time looking for the right one.. now I need to find more

"They say a great photographer can take wonderful images with crappy equipment."
I have a coffee table book that is nothing but photos taken w/ one of those cheap disposable cameras.. some of the pics are absolutely amazing.. I also have another of nothing but camera phone images... again.. amazing.

Great photos are alot more about the subject and composition then they are about getting the technical side of photography down. Alot of the "famous" photos (esp in the media) aren't focused correctly or arent exposed correctly.. but create emotion in those that look at the image.. and that is what makes a photo good. It has to stir some sort of feeling inside.

AG Parrots are awesome! The one in the pics is a sweetie (the mate is an SOB though.. but that is for another forum). I have always wanted to go to Kenya.. maybe someday.

But I understand what you are saying.. it is bittersweet to see something like that.. puts alot of things into perspective.
