Something other than HB2414...

... and I am sure that everyone is ready! LOL!

A buddy of mine from Lubbock came down to San Angelo yesterday afternoon and decided to head to Crockett county to look for Crotalus lepidus. No leps, but he did collect a nice dark phase 27" alterna... lots of white, clean orange and no alternates. He was pretty stoked, as this was his first alterna in over 9 years of hunting the Trans-Pecos!

Time was 11:20 pm and the air temp was a comfortable 75 degrees. Very light southeast wind.

Other herps noted were:
Crotalus atrox
Masticophis flagellum
Thamnophis cyrtopsis
Salvadora grahamiae

I guess the season has "officially" begun?!

Happy herpin'...

If it is the first of the season we should see a picture?

I emailed you a few times a couple of weeks ago but received no response.

I went looking for milks in N Taylor Co and Shackelford as well at the end of March, but you weren't specific enough in your clues...I flipped rocks on a hill in the middle of a highway interchange and turned up only a small partial shed. Walked/flipped a cut and maybe found a patchnose in Shackelford (poor quality pic), which would be a county record.

I hope to be at the WTHS Sanderson meeting in June, but "work" might dictate an "extended business trip" at about the same time.

I might try to head to Val Verde as early as two weeks from now for some herpin', or if someone can give me reliable (i.e. no "wild goose chases" ) info on where to see my other sought-after reticulatus (of the Crotaphytus type), I might head downstream to see those.

Also, where's my Alterna book? I never heard if the San Angelo TV station aired any of my presentation.

Also, that last subject/response was meant in a lighthearted tone which didn't come across on the interwebs. I'll have to triple my smiley output!

In Late February (24th) on a quick C1 Full Moon trip through Colorado Canyon, there was a male alterna crawling through a boulder pile near the confluence of Closed Canyon. The second sighting this year came on March 14th near the confluence of San Carlos Creek, another male, just before the entrance of Santa Elena Canyon. There are pictures, but there is no one in the town of Alpine that I would trust to develop them (I have not graduated to digital, and will not as long as I can avoid it). So there is a pile of film in waiting. There has been alot of herp activity since about the last weekend in February along the river and in several side tributary canyons.

The most interesting of those two sightings is the February sighting. The mean temp in Terlingua was 16 degrees lower on the 24th than the previous day (64 to 48), and the low recorded at Terlingua was 13 degrees lower (50 to 37).

Just goes to show you, If you don't go look, you won't find anything. When you do go look, you might find something!
