My Baby girl

WBDMN22 Apr 27, 2007 06:12 PM

Im new to the forum, I jsut have a question. I have an ornate box turtle, she is a little girl, and she seems very happy! Today when I was feeding her, I noticed something that looked like dirt on the corners of her mouth. trying to wipe the dirt off I realized they are scabs. There is a crack between the scabs, What am I doing wrong???? Any suggestions??? Please!

I'm sorry to hear about that.

In order to determine if you're doing something wrong, we'd need to know what you are doing. Could you possibly describe your husbandry in as much detail as possible?:
caging, lighting, temperature, humidity, food items, length of captivity, where you got the turtle, substrate, and a basic description of the turtle's behavior(daily activity, chasing bugs or not, eyes opened or closed, etc.)

I'm sorry for all of the questions, but this is a tough one. It could be anything from abrasions to internal organ damage. Dried blood at the corners of the mouth is a serious concern. If it were me, I'd take the turtle to the Vet. immediately.

Good luck. I'm sorry that it has taken a few days for someone to reply.

Just so everyone knows, I took my girl into the vet. The vet said she had a wart virus that had infected the sides of her mouth. The vet said it was good to bring her in as they can sometimes grow into the insides of the mouth. I was given a antibiotic salve to put on twice a day. Since then they have cleared up considerably, but I think my little girl is still skiddish from the vet pulling the scabs off to look at them under a scope. She is getting better though! thanks for your help
