Pygmy and dwarf chams

Chameleon996 Apr 27, 2007 06:26 PM

I had a stump tail and he was the cutest thing but unfortunately i don't think i had him set up right and he only made it about 8 months. since they require so much humidity is it possible to keep them in a tank that would work for dart frogs. I have dart frogs and make my own planted vivariums with glass lids. would this work for any of the dwarf chams?

Well if it was a wild caught juvie/adult pygmy then 8 months isn’t too bad. I highly suggest not using a dart frog like setup … they are just too humid and do not have the necessary air flow required for a chameleon. I have been keeping pygmies for almost three years and have no issues with an average humidity around 55-60 with them along with a couple good mistings each day. Here are some links for them …

If you live in a super dry area then this article may help. My preference is to always try and get the room humidity up but sometimes that’s very difficult especially if you don’t have a room dedicated to chameleons.

i checked out the links and the one on building a habitat is almost exactly how i do my dart frog tanks. hydroton on the bottom then i put screen with coc fiber bedding on top i plant my plants instead of leaving them potted seed the tank with springtails and everything else. So the only difference is the top i should use a screen lid instead of a glass one, does that sound right? with a few other alterations like more sticks and vines and it should be good right?

Yes, an all screen top and 5.0 UVB lighting. Just pay attention to how much you mist though and how high the humidity is. Sometimes, from what I have seen with dart frog peeps keeping leaf chams is that they tend to have the tank too humid - so its a bit of an adjustment that you need to pay attention too. Having an oscillating fan in the corner of the room will help with the air flow to the tank and make sure the foliage, leaf litter, etc. has dried out before you mist again, its fine that the substrate stays somewhat moist. If you don’t pay attention to that, then given time you will find the tank will get soggy and you want to avoid that.

okay that sounds pretty good. thanks for all the advice, now any advice as to where to get a pair of them i emailed sandfire dragons yesterday and they havn't gotten back to me yet. i am going to check with the guy that i got the last one off of to see if it was WC or CB but i won't be attending that show until my water dragons hatch. it will be awhile before i build the cage though i am currently building a 55 for my new frogs and revamping one of my panther cages.

I would check out FLChams.com or the KS classifieds for CB/CH pygmies.
