Mites!

black_wolf Apr 27, 2007 07:25 PM

Ok, so it's not me with a mite problem but my friend who has a Jungle carpet python. I know there use to be something called "Provent a Mite" but it's not on the market anymore (at least not at Petsmart). So I got think other stuff Jurassi-mite but JurassiPet. It says it's all natural mite, flea, and tick control for reptiles.
Has anyone used it? should I just get my money back?

Provent-a-mite is still around and it is still the best stuff to use. google it.

The Walmart stuff is the SAME active ingredient, and performs the same. Just one-third the price. Most veterinarians know it.

You just saved me almost $300/month on my Provent-a-mite bills. Anyone can check pesticideinfo.org and see all similar products and where they are sold. The active ingredient is 0.50% Permethrin.

I don't begrudge the guy making money selling the stuff, but for some people, it is easier and cheaper to buy the Walmart stuff. That IS the correct ingredient in both products, btw. He claims that there are different proprietary ingredients in his, and that may very well be, but not enough for me to pay the extra money. I went up to the Walmart pharmacy with 6 cans of it and the woman said "I bet you keep snakes, right?" I started to laugh. Seems like I wasn't the first. I have a good friend who's an exotic pet vet, and they've sprayed it directly on baby rattlers with no harm done.

Thanks again. It seems that similar products are sold everywhere.

My exterminator swears by the stuff. He uses it in a number of different forms, and it's also for use topically in humans. Very safe...unless you're a mite

On the topic of Permethrin. It is a listed carcinogen just so you know. It may cause cancer in you or your pets. I only use it now as a cure instead of a preventative like I used to. If I get a mite outbreak I use it in all my cages for a period of three months after the last mite is seen and then stop. It is a poison when you get right down to it and that is what you are using it for...

Well, it's available by prescription in cream form for Skin mites from your doctor. It's safe in the dosages used.

Not all brands of .05% permethrin spray are the same.

I have had seen several problems over the years with people who used generic brands. It all depends on what else is in the can. Probably most are just fine but you never know because they are not tested on herps. The only thing that preventamite gives you for your money is an assurance that THAT specific product has been tested on herps and is safe.

Snakesunlimited1 Apr 29, 2007 09:30 AM

Do a search on the chemical name and you will see it is a carcinogen. So is the aluminum in most deodorant. Something like 90% of breast tumors contain aluminum but they still sell deodorant without a prescription.

I am not saying not to use it but I want you to know that it is by no means 100% safe. Tested on herps or not it is still a carcinogen. I still use it because damn near everything is a carcinogen now a days, and mites are worse than possible cancer. All I am saying is I have switched to using it as a cure instead of spraying every cage every cleaning. Basically, if and when I get mites from a show I go for PAM or Equate first and that is as far as I need to go, both are great. I just don't expose my animals and myself needlessly. You are breathing that stuff too!!
