Housing hatchlings/juveniles

she_geek Apr 28, 2007 02:07 PM

Hi everyone,

I'm planning on breeding my cresteds, but wanted to make sure I could provide individual housing for any babies before I took the step (no fighting, no biting!). I'm having trouble finding information on how much space to provide neonates and juveniles; a lot of breeders seem to put them in sterilite boxes like snakes or leopards, but I'd rather give them more vertical climbing and hiding space.

I was thinking of 1 gallon or 2.5 gallon plastic jars with fake foliage, bamboo sticks and cork bark, but can't find any information on how large/old a juvenile I could house in such an enclosure. I would put in a lot of hanging foliage; 1 gallon jars are usually 10 inches high and 2.5 gallons are 14 inches high. Any thoughts on how big a gecko I might be able to put in those? Or should I be building something bigger from scratch?

for my hatchlings (straight from the egg hatchlings, as I breed them) I use the plastic dry storage bins I pick up at a Dollar store. These are about 14" by 6" by 6" or something like that. I just use some fake plants and paper towel on the bottom. These are great for one or two newly hatched dragons till they are about 4-5" snout to tail tip (if kept two in the came container, I move one out into their own container when they are about 3" long).

Once babies are about 4-5" long they are good to move into an adult size cages.

I keep little guys in 2.5 gallon tanks. They're cheap, easy to come buy, and there's a lot more room in there than first appears. Mine have climbing branches, fake leaves, and there's still plenty of empty space.
