new kenyan sand boa

yogi41 Apr 28, 2007 09:22 PM

I just bought a kenyan sand boa. I'm currently using a heat pad with cage carpet and calci sand, it's supposed to be made out of calcium carbonate since people had issues with real sand. I read on some pages that I should get a container with spagnum moss. I was wondering if i'm supposed to put water in the moss and what temperature is it supposed to be at. I was also wondering if I should get some kind of heater on top if my temperature is usually around 75-80 in the room. I have one side of the area around 90. Thanks for any help.

I don't think KSBs need a humidity box (hide box with spagnum moss). I'm new with KSBs as well so I might be wrong.

Well according to R.D. Bartlett's (Rosy, Rubber and Sand Boas book) the warm side should be 95-100 degrees F while the cooler side between 75-85 degrees F. I have an UTH as well and the stick on thermometer doesn't work as well. You'll need a temperature gun to accurately measure the temps. In terms of humidity all Barlett says is to keep it low. My room is always at 60% humidity and I don't know how to lower the the humidity in my KSBs' cages. I even go rid of their water bowls to try to lower the humidity. Hope this helps.

60% humidity is fine. I would leave the water source in the cage all the time.

I agree temps should be 90-95F on warm side.
