Bahama Brown Anole being a... picky eater?

rainspike Aug 14, 2003 12:50 PM

One of my newest reptiles is my Bahaman anole, I've never dealt with anoles so it’s somewhat semi-new, anyway, he’s quite young, and I think this is, the third day I've had him. I’ve been trying to get him to eat some pin crickets, releasing them right in front of him, or holding it by his mouth with a tweezers (I had to give up on that one fast because the crickets legs kept falling off) The crickets finally wandered off away from him and I didn’t want to go digging through the tank after them because id rather not stress him out more than necessary. It’s a 20-gallon tank, so I figured they wouldn’t bother him too much. I haven’t seen those two crickets since and I doubt they could hide anywhere (they haven’t come up to the heat lamp either, which usually the crickets would) its possible he could’ve eaten them, but he’s pretty much stayed up in the branches in the left of the terrarium had some banana baby food on the branch by him but he didn’t seem to really be interested in that. I cant say he’s been drinking a great deal either, although he did seem slightly interested when I was trying to get him to drink with the mister, but didn’t show the same interest later on when I was trying with the eye dropper.

Of course he obviously wont eat that much the first few days just because of the new environment, let alone there’s the fact he is still quite young, but I’m obsessive and want to make sure I’m not depriving him. Basically, it’s him, alone, in a 20-gallon tank, so the only stress source would probably be the new setting and all. Any suggestions on what I should try feeding him?

is he a really light brown or a very dark brown? Only mist like one time a day, and make sure you get water droplets on leafs and some on the sides of the cage. also, get him a water dish (no more than 1/2 inch deep as if it is bigger, he could drown. I just bought my anoles a waterfall. i love it. i think they have been drinking from it, but i cant be positive. also, GO OUTSIDE TONIGHT, and catch a few moths. introduce them to your anole one at a time, and if he eats them, at least you will know that he is eating. try these things, and let me know how it works out!

Yeah I've been sure to have droplets out water around him and on the leaves and all, today he seemed to be reacting slightly more to the water, opening and closing his mouth with I dropped water by him, although I don’t think he caught any, so a lot good that did. I put some more banana baby food on the branch, he was eyeing it so I slowly backed away and I’m still waiting to see if any is gone. I added another cricket, and it crawling on the leaf he was on, I think the cricket was even on one of his legs and he just sat there, my tree frogs would’ve jumped for a chance to have a cricket begging to eat them, talk about easy street. But of course he paid no attention to the cricket. Ill go out tonight and catch a few moths are see if he'll take to them, I’m so worried because I have to leave for like four days, I really don’t want to leave him with my parents while he’s being so fussy, I’m going to have to type out a book for them just to make sure they don’t screw up.

And as for coloring, he was pretty dark most of yesterday, but it was probably because he was on the dark branches most of the day, he was lighter today and light when he was sleeping, and he even jumped on this speckled leaf and became speckled, I’m so easily amused

I just noticed a piece of skin that has been shed on the bottom of the tank, although I haven’t noticed a full body shedding going on, its possible he could’ve already shed most of his skin before I got him, or he may just be stepping into the process, in any case, if he is shedding or has shed, its natural for him not to eat much, which is a major relief, but then again, I’m still slightly worried about the whole matter.

interesting reading your post - I just got a female on Monday (see post just below with pic). Do you know how old yours is? How long s/v?

Mine is in with two greens (got them all together) but she is staying up in a branch on the upper right side of tank (30 gal-high). I have not seen her eat yet either. I am thinking of separating her to make sure she is getting food as I know the other two are. It may just be the new environment but if she is in fact gravid then I have to make sure she is getting enough food.

I got my green anoles to cup feed. I dust the crix then put them in a small plastic bowl. I hate to do it but I pull off at least one back leg so they can't get out Give that a try and see it he'll eat.

It may be a good ited to seperate her. Also, it would be a good ider if you are feeding her crickets to feed the crickets "Flukers Calcium Fortified cricket quencher" It is a yellow gel like substance that the servs as the crickets food and drink. it also gut loads the crickets w/ extra calcium. after this, make sure to still dust the crickets with vitamins and calcium. Especially pregnant anoles need extra calcium to make sure their eggs are nice and hard.
