Good Morphs to start with

cotterw Apr 29, 2007 08:11 PM

I'm looking to get into breeding and I want to eventually make my hobby into a business. What would be some good morphs to try to start out with?

thanks

Why get into it as a business when there is way too much competition and very few buyers? The "BIG BOYS" did a horrible job of promoting ball pythons to new buyers, their brilliant idea of making "under the table" deals has completely destroyed buyer confidence and ultimately wrecked the market. As a result, nobody is selling anything. if someone tells you theyre selling ball morphs, theyre either selling them overseas, theyre selling them for less than half of the prices you see on the classifieds or they are just flat out lying to you and probably a combination of the three.

IF and ONLY IF you really LOVE ball pythons.....try clowns, albinos, ghosts, anything simple recessive. Avoid all the common codominant junk that's plastered all over the classifieds...mojaves, cinnamons, lessers, butters, pinstripes, spiders, pastels and so on. ALL that stuff will be $250 to $500 within another year or two.

If you want to get into the reptile biz and aren't stuck on BP morphs, consider a business plan with multiple species and preferably morphs that aren't being overproduced to death by everyone and their brother.

$250 to $500 within the next year or two? So what?
That's $500...the cost of a cheap used car, or a big screen tv...for a snake.
Not too shabby if you ask me.

He's talking about going into business to make a living, not raising funds to buy rusty old cars and 32" televisions (that's all the TV you're getting for $500).

In a business, you pay taxes...meaning 40% of that $250 to $500 goes to the government. Your '97 Ford Aspire just went missing an engine and your TV just shrunk to a 27".

If you want to do it as a hobby and use the money to buy toys or even remodel the kitchen, that's one thing...starting a profitable, sustainable business that you can make a living from is quite different.

Ain't nothin' wrong with co-doms...just think of them as hets. Nobody's going to make decent money selling hets, but homozygous animals are always valuable.

For example, there may be a gazillion Mojaves for sale, but you probably couldn't find a dozen supers if you wanted to.
