Test Holes...???

Steve_5201 Apr 29, 2007 09:42 PM

How many test holes over what time period do females usually dig before they lay their eggs? I have two females that are gravid, and both have dug test holes but did not lay. One dug a test hole Friday, skipped yesterday, and dug another today, but has already quit and gone to sleep. The other just dug one hole yesterday and is also sleeping right now.

Mine usually don't dig any test holes per se: they typically only give up on a nest hole if they encounter an obstruction, or if they are disturbed/threatened in some way.

It's a little early in the season for nesting, too.

I don't normally have "test holes" in my captives, but I've seen it in wild turtles quite often.

It seems to me, and this is just my observation, that the nights flanking a full moon can sometimes lead to strange nesting behavior. I am lucky enough to know of a spot where I can walk trails during "the right conditions" and see a handful of nesting Eastern box turtles. The females seem to dig more false nests during the week of a full moon, which this week happens to be.
