Curious about Black Rats...

coluberking25 Apr 30, 2007 02:36 AM

Today I saw some reptiles that my college's lab keeps...and saw an awesome black rat. My interest in them has rekindled.

All I know is that they're amazingly easy to keep(possibly breed before I try colombian rainbows?). Thing is...I don't know how large a cage the average adult Black Rat needs. I know they can get 6 plus feet...but the ones I've seen have been around 4 maybe 5.

Pretty much any info on keeping black rats is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This isn't a rat snake...but my prized posession in my small collection.

I recomend a 4x2x2 for a large black rat. I am sure you could keep a smaller one in a 40 gallon breeder though. Not much to know about them. Get them young, handle them often, and enjoy!

i currently have a ababy female BlK rat housed in a ten galon and i intend on keeping her in there for quite some time ,im surei will give here a 20 gallon or her own custom once she hits the 3 foot or more breding size , ay thing that gets almost 4 of bigger i build custom breeder cages for them, .
ALSO!!! make an aboreal section for them too , not that many people do ,and the black rats that i have made an aboreal section for usualy love it and never leave there tree coup . a couple stick/branches andsome fake foliage baught at a reptile shop does the trick
