Thought I'd share another black rat tale

coluberking25 Apr 30, 2007 10:01 AM

I've been captivated by black rats for awhile now. Ever since finding about half a dozen 4 or 5 footers at a camp...I got hooked and my interest has gone on and off(currently on lol).

I actually almost got a black rat a few years ago. A friend of my uncle's has tons of them on his property and I asked if I could have one. He promised to catch me one.

Well he did catch me one. He saw a six footer on his porch, I believe it was about to raid a birdhouse of his. Thing was...he lived pretty far...so he had to hold onto it for me. Problem was, he tried keeping the guy in a barrel that was covered and weighed down...and he STILL kept pushing the top off.

The thing is, it kind of stinks I never got that snake. Six footers sound tough to come by...

It seems I guessed wrong that biggies are rare. I've been looking at old posts and see tons of 5-6 footers found in many states. Maybe there's hope after all...

Actually I could use a dwarf black rat lol. My 40 gallon breeder is occupied by my Colombian Rainbow boa lol.

You know that if you find a 6' Black Rat in the wild, chances are that it is a very old snake. If you want a large Bkack Rat, get a CB male, and feed him a lot. He will get big and long very quickly that way.

Despite the cool macho image I'd get with a 6' rat...I'd rather have one I can keep small so I have room for it lol.

Here is the thing about black rat snakes . . . they are sometimes ignored here and on other forums because they are relatively common and have such a wide range and have far fewer designer morphs than boas or corn snakes, but I think that makes them very useful snakes for the herp hobby. Many kids who first got interested in snakes did so by finding and catching a black rat snake in their back yard or a nearby field. They are usually hardy and easy captives who still display some defensive habits, which make them an ideal snake for learning. In fact, aside from garters, I would bet that the humble black rat snake is the most frequently encountered, captured and kept by beginning herpers. Ecological value aside, that makes them a most useful species.

It ws the other way around...the black rat got into me! With his teeth of course .

Actually I was amazed just finding about 6 in a day at a camp. The only one I caught was the one that bit me. Very memorable experience. I received so much poularity that day from the cub scouts.
