Just got a new female..

VTEC May 21, 2003 03:06 PM

A friend of mine just sold me his female that he had living with a tangerine male.

About 4 weeks ago we noticed eggs in the female so we put her in her own 10 gallon. She laid the eggs in there but they died because he was away on active duty (iraq related) while they were laid. Anyway, after about 2 weeks after she laid, he put the female back with the male and he mated with her right away. No eggs since then but I have a feeling she is probably pregnant. I put her in a seperate enclosure (5.5 gallon) on paper towels with 1 hide, water, calc. dish, and a few wax worms. Is the 5.5 gallon enclosure sufficient for her and is there anything else I can do to help her out health-wise?

Well first she should go in a tank at least 10gln. maybe more. and she should have a humid hide so she feels comfortable lying eggs and she should not be fed solely wax-worms. mealworms supplemented w/ crickets is a good staple diet. And wax worms about once a month for a breeding adult is good. you should dust her food w/ calcium at every to every other feeding. Do not re-introduce her w/ the male chances are she is fertalized for the year. If you have any more questions feel free to ask! Hope this helped!

I did dust the wax worms with calcium already.. I have some crickets too but I didn't think a pregnant female would feel like going after them.. I will pick up some mealies though and supplement them. What would be a good way to make a humid hide and some good grounds for her to lay in? What is a better substrate for a preg. female, calci-sand or paper towel? Thanks

A 5.5 is fine if you are referring to a 5.5 flat herp enclosure, it has the same floor space as a standard ten gallon (aquarium).
