Anyone have any herp experience with Trimeth Sulf? (more)

Gixer May 21, 2003 03:08 PM

My dragon is suffering from MBD. How she got it, I really dont know. She eats her greens every day and my crickets are coated and loaded. I had been using Lumichrome 1xx until 2 days ago when I switched to ReptiSun 5.0.

Anyway I called the vet to see if they could do a calcium injection. After an examination and a cear fecal he prescribed TriMethSulf Compound. Two drops twice daily and a follow up in 2 weeks. I'm kinda scared since I read that calcium should be administered right away.

I was thinking of going to the GNC and getting some liquid calcium to give her orally. Any thoughts or experiences?

Thanks

antimicrobial would do for MBD is beyond me unless you're fighting both. FWIW, TMS didn't cure my beardie's coccidia, but Albon did.

Thats is a infection drug, nothing to do with calcium.... are you sure her fecal was clear and he did not feel she has some other infection going on?

here is a link about these combo drugs
Sulfa and Trimeth

TMS is an antibiotic nothing whatsoever to do with MBD as far as I know. What you need is neocalglucon or calcium glubinate. I think these are prescription only drugs but I might be wrong (I work in a vet clinic so I get mine through them anyways)
i wouldn't use a human calcium supplement, use a reptile one or just plain cuttlebone, Tums are ok and even fruit flavored (ground up of course)
With MBD you might want to make absolutely sure you got UVA abd UVB working that is pretty important while they are getting better, and my reptile vet recommends a diet a bit higher in protien while they are recovering (but don't go overboard with beardies, they still need their veggies)
Hope that helps

Thanks everyone, If I should be hand feeding her, what should I give her? Mix in calcium in the feed too? The vet said that he made a combination drug but only marked it TMS compound. I really thought that she would get an injection of calcium.... Her lower jaw is slightly larger than the top and she had just started toe twitching last night but was moving around. Now she just lays there with her head down and she's already looking thiner to me.

Thanks again!!!!

If the vet is treating for coccidia then the TMS should be used for a while, its hard to get rid of, usually longer than two weeks. MBD WILL NOT be cured in two weeks!! You might not see a difference for two MONTHS. I would ask your vet just what he is doing, maybe get a second opinion.
Yeah you want the kiddo to keep on eating, that is very important, feed her whatever she'll eat.

I have injected neocalglucon into worms and waxworms and crickets before. It is very sweet (I've tried it myself, tastes like sugar water)
With MBD you don't want to mess around get the best calcium out there

I have made an appointment with another vet. I have been making her a mixture of chicken baby food, water, calcium powder, and a little bit of liquid calciumVitamin D3 that I bought at GNC. I have to hand feed her the mixture of course but she seems to like it.

Thanks again for all the info. I'll keep you posted!

they have a liquid calcium supplement that is made by Jurassi-Cal, and maybe you will have better luck than me with it...but, when my uromastyx was diagnosed with MBD I tried giving this to her and she didn't like it...she acted like it was spicy hot...I tasted a little of it and sure enough, it kinda burned my mouth. My other lizards won't touch their food if I spray this on top. Just a little info about this product in case you happen to come across a website selling it!
Good Luck!

Ok here is what I have done. Last year, my first breeding, I didn't properly prep my female. So her second clutch had a few babies that had some calcium issues. I used a syringe with a feeding needle on it. I would mix up rep cal calcium with d3 with water draw it into the syringe and then administer it into the dragons mouth. To do this you can hold the dragon with your left hand against your chest. Don't hold it with you first finger or thoumb, these two I use to gently pull on the dragons beard to open the mouth. I then adminster the calcium into the dragons mouth. The usually love it. As far as food you could use some chicken baby food mixed in with pedialyte. Or bird food, however there is one type that isn't good but i am not sure which. I have also used a liquid calcium from esu, I generally use that to wet down the hatchlings veggies. It smells like watermelon, but I haven't tasted it. Good luck, a shot of calcium may have been in order, maybe some b12 to jump start the dragon's appetite. But what is done is done. It sounds as if the mbd is in begining stages, with toe shakes. So I would think it would be reversable. Oh I would give it calcium daily, and also mist them daily. When on sulpha drugs they need extra fluids.
