cham owner looking into geckos

iso Aug 14, 2003 02:16 PM

hi all!

Well - I just moved my jackson into a new 3'x2'x2' screen cage.

Now I have a 65 Gallon reptarium..you know the nylon mesh ones..sitting empty.

It is currently without substrate, but I have a liner so one can easily be added. I have multiple plants in the enclosure - - hibiscus, hoya, croton, etc...it also has lots of bamboo and other walkways and hiding places. Was considering building a waterfall system with bamboo cut in half...an exaggerated drip system really.

The cage temp goes up to 85 in the hot area, but maintains a 70 at the bottom and 74 in the middle area. Full UVB and UVA lights are there as well. evening temps are 68-70 at night...

It is hooked into my auto misiting system so I can keep the humidity up in the 70% during the day and 90-100% at night. Also has a fogger system, but Im not using it atm.

What species would you suggest for that enclosure? I would like something I can breed and enjoy that experience. I dont want to handle it, but Id like to be able to know that I can if I need to. Something interesting to watch and enjoy behaviors is what I am looking for.

If you want a gecko with all the qualities you just mentioned you need a Tokay. Not to sure about the reptarium though you have correct temps and humidity level and from what it sounds everything a Tokay would enjoy. Mine love to hang out on glass but also climb on the screen lid, semms alittle more dificult for them and they wouldnt be able to do all the awsome things they can on glass. maybe someone else has kept one in that type of tank.

heres the one i was going to show. I have Leos, AFTs and now Dune Geckos(which are cool) but nothing compares to the Tokays as far as a interesting gecko to watch. Very active, very very aggresive hunters/eaters. Every one that visits my home is awed by them, that is after they jump thru the roof when the get close to one in the viv. They hang out every night and watch me here on the PC. My pals.

heh - I actually have one. He sits in a custom cage I made for him. He has been with me for 4 years now...i think. Mean as the devil and I think he sits in his cage thinking of ways to bite me. Sometimes when he sees the chameleon (20 feet away) move in his cage he barks.

Try leaftail geckos (uroplatus), especially the giant ones. They're rather friendly (yet fragile) and like to jump around which is interesting to watch at night. They do NOTHING during the day, however, just sit on thier log or whatever you put in there. Giant day geckos will be active during the day and not at night but those are really not for handling at all. Crested geckos will work as well and are pretty friendly and not very big so you can put more of them in that tank. Same with gargoyle geckos, white lined geckos, house geckos, and many other common species. You can also do fattails if you lay it on the side and make it a long tank. Thats all I can think of at the moment. All of those listed will require slightly different temp and humidity but it shouldnt be a problem given your expertise with chameleons and so on
