Housing for a Gator

jacobk May 01, 2007 04:33 PM

Hey im curious im thinking about picking up a baby gator soon, and was wondering for right now would it be alright to house him in like a clear rubbermaid bin, with a heatlamp on top of the land area, and maybe some type of heat tape under the water? Ive had alligators before, but never tried a setup like this, and was wondering if it would be possible to set an enclosure up like that for one? Thanks

That's how I've been keeping my baby gator. For land, I'm using a ZooMed turtle dock. It floats on the top of the water, and is held in place with suction cups. I have a heat lamp pointing at it, and he loves to bask on it. The floating dock allows a great basking spot without sacrificing swimming space. This simple setup has worked great for me and is very easy to clean.

MikeSnake: thanks for this float suction idea. I went to Petsmart and saw that it costs like 20 bucks for the bigger one. Smaller one cost 12 bucks. I am going to buy it and see how it works out for me. Thanks!
